SYMI

Best for: Castaway coves and a picture-perfect port

18. Symi

Little Symi has the prettiest port in Greece. As you round the headland, neoclassical mansions in every shade of apricot and peach rise like a mirage from the sea. Built by 19th-century sponge and spice merchants, the whole town is now a national monument. You need strong legs to explore - it's about 500 steps up to the crumbling acropolis - but you won't need a car. The only proper road peters out at Panormitis monastery, a major

Greek culture

 Greek culture

Greek culture is one of the most emblematic in the world. The habitation of Greece from deep prehistory, the miracle of classical Greek culture, the glory of Byzantium, and the country’s modern history excite the imagination.

Greece is truly a vast exhibition area in which centuries, influences and everyday life are intermingled. Whoever has the chance to visit a small Greek island will surely observe the continuation of culture as even daily utensils are identical to those found in museum show-cases.

Archaeological research and collective practice never cease in Greece. Treasures from another era are continually coming to light and we gain a wider understanding of the historical evolvement of the Greek world with every new discovery. The wealth, depth and significance of this lasting Greek culture are on display in countless museums scattered across the country. Museums are arks of memory and memory in Greece reaches far back in time.

Emerald water, sand dunes, heavenly beaches and cloudless skies… You’ll want to stay forever

Tavernas and coffee shops in the centre of ElafonisosWelcome to one of the most beautiful Greek islands! In the southern Peloponnese, there is a place plucked from a dream: Elafonisos, an exotic island of just 19 sq. km, like one long sliver of paradise. Once here, you can  forget all about modern civilization. The only thing you’ll need is a sarong, a sun hat and sunscreen, because life here - day and night - happens on the beach; on the pure white sand, in  the translucent turquoise water, in the shade of the cedars and  under the clear blue sky and the bright sun. Your imagination dances delightedly along the  infinite horizon and like just about everyone that comes here for a beach holiday, you will want to stay forever… a castaway on Elafonisos.

What to do on Elafonisos
